Microsoft Copilot – the first 150 days for SME’s
Back in January 2024 Microsoft widened the availability of Microsoft Copilot to SME businesses currently subscribing to M365 Business Standard, M365 Business Premium and Office 365 E3 and E3 plans. As we are now in the fifth month since this development, I thought it would be interesting see what we have learned with an 150-day review, much like we see with the review of a President’s performance in their first 100 days.
To recap on Microsoft Copilot, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are increasingly turning to innovative solutions to enhance their operations. Microsoft Copilot, a cutting-edge tool within the Microsoft 365 suite, has emerged as a game-changer for SMBs, offering numerous features that streamline tasks, automate workflows, and foster collaboration. Over the past 150 days, key insights have been gathered from the deployment of Microsoft Copilot in the SMB sector, revealing its significant impact on productivity and business growth.
Key insights on how AI is being adopted and integrated within SMB’s
AI’s Enduring Presence and Initial Missteps
AI’s excitement and innovation are undeniable. However, many SMBs initially see AI as a novelty rather than a transformative tool, leading to underestimation or hasty adoption without fully understanding its potential. When it comes to Copilot there are generally three customer types:-
- those with minimal AI understanding,
- those diving in without caution, and
- those recognising risks and restricting use.
This spectrum of engagement underscores the market’s eagerness, but also its need for clearer guidance.
Misunderstanding AI’s Role
A significant challenge is the misunderstanding of AI capabilities. Many SMBs expect AI like Microsoft Copilot to autonomously handle all business functions (do the work for them). Instead, AI should enhance existing processes rather than replace them. A key factor here is the use of Copilot prompting to generate the desired ‘output’ for the User, this is a skill in itself.
The distinction between public AI (e.g., ChatGPT. Copilot for Edge) and corporate AI solutions (e.g., Copilot for Microsoft 365) is also crucial. While public AI is suitable for general enquiries, corporate AI (if deployed properly) offers secure, business-tailored functionalities based on actual Corporate Data, which has greater value-add.
The Importance of Corporate Data
Talking of Corporate Data, this is crucial for maximising AI effectiveness. Adopting Copilot emphasises the need for understanding data fundamentals, including classification, governance, and protection. Proper data management ensures AI tools like Copilot operate securely and efficiently, preventing data leaks and security risks.
The Role of Backup in AI Readiness
Reliable backup strategies are essential in safeguarding corporate data, a foundational element for AI solutions. Fusion IT provides robust, secure backups for critical business data, ensuring recovery in case of mishaps. This reliability is vital as businesses enter the AI space, minimising downtime and data loss.
Embracing AI with Strategic Planning
Adopting AI requires ongoing education and strategic planning. Fusion IT can help customers stay informed and businesses can unlock new levels of efficiency and innovation. In fact, we offer free Copilot assessments in conjunction with one of our key Distributors – naturally terms apply…!
