British Airways is facing a record fine of £183m for last year’s breach of its security systems.
At the time, BA said hackers had carried out a “sophisticated, malicious criminal attack” on its website.
Prepared by the BBC the chart shows the other companies fined more than £250,000 since 2012. Up until todays fine the largest fines were imposed on Facebook and Equifax who were both fined £500,000 last year when that was the maximum allowed.
The message is clear – if you don’t treat your customers’ data with the utmost care you can expect severe fines when things go wrong and further highlights the fact that businesses need to play an active role in understanding the risks and protecting against breaches of important data and intellectual property in their workplace.
