Both broadband and a leased line provide Internet access, the differences are:
Leased Lines vs Broadband
- Leased Lines are dedicated internet lines that help you do everything at faster speeds, with improved quality of video and voice. The Leased Line is exclusive to your business, high speeds are guaranteed as you are the only user on the line, they offer identical upload and download speeds.
- Broadband is not a dedicated connection between your premises and the local exchange. It is variable bandwidth, asymmetric, meaning faster for downloads than for uploads
Leased Lines
A dedicated leased line provides a private fixed bandwidth point-to-point data connection, whereas broadband lines are shared with other users.
Leased Lines guarantee a high level of service, smooth lines with no interruptions and reduced latency and jitter. It is the only internet connection that offers a 5-hour SLA (Service Level Agreement).
Broadband
The most common types of fixed-line broadband in the UK are ADSL and fibre:
- ADSL broadband is a connection provided over copper telephone lines. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. A splitter goes into your premises and the telephone signal and broadband network signal separates. ADSL does provide a high-quality, reliable connection, but if your premises are far away from your telephone exchange, or if the cable has degraded, then speeds can drop dramatically.
- Fibre broadband is delivered via clusters of fibre optic cables and speeds are faster than ADSL. Each one of the fibre optic cables are thinner than human hair and they carry data via beams of light. These cables offer greater speeds over longer distances, providing faster and more reliable performance than older, copper-based ADSL lines.
There are two types of fast fibre broadband: fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the premises (FTTP).
Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) – this is fibre to the exchange (street cabinet) and then the service is delivered through a copper phone line to your premises. FTTC’s maximum speed is 80Mbps. FTTC is a home and business product delivering great speeds, it is extremely cheap monthly but comes with NO SLA.
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) – this is a fibre line direct to your premises. Fibre-to-the-premises broadband services can offer speeds of up to 1Gbit/s (i.e. 1,000Mbit/s).
FTTP is much more expensive than FTTC but comes with extremely fast, dedicated, symmetrical speeds and a business level SLA.
Here is a quick Summary:
- Leased Lines are private internet lines, offering fasters speeds of up to 10Gbps. Leased Line speed can range from 10mbps to 10Gbps, you can pick whatever speed you would like.
- Leased Line speeds are guaranteed as you are the only user on the line. It is the only internet connection with a 5-hour SLA.
- Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) is a shared broadband internet connection, offering speeds of up to 80Mbps. FTTC comes with no SLA.
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) FTTP is a shared broadband connection, much more expensive than FTTC but comes with fast, symmetrical speeds of up to 1Gbit and a business level SLA.
