What is Track Changes?
Track Changes is a setting in a Word document that allows you to view any changes that have been made. You can select what you would like to see marked if changed and view who made changes and what was amended.
It also has the ability to allow you to either accept or reject these changes making your document a working active document between parties.
How to Apply Basic Track Changes
Select the Review Tab and click on Track Changes to turn on (from this point all changes you make will be marked) Marking means it is marked to be deleted or marked to be added but the change can be rejected or accepted at a later date.
Select the view you would like to see:
- Simple Markup – displays a mark in the left hand margin to identify the paragraph where changes have occurred
- All Markup – displays each change within the document as they are made
- No Markup – this hides the marked changes and displays the text as if the changes had been accepted (this is only a view)
- Original – displays the document without any changes (you can see what the document looked like prior to changes)
How the changes are displayed:
- Show Revisions in Balloons – Deletions removed and added to a balloon to the right of the document
- Show all Revisions Inline – Deletions are struck through in their original position & additions remain in place
- Show only Comments & Formatting in Balloons – All changes to the document will be shown as inline with the exception of formatting and comments which will appear in balloons to the right of the document.
Amending Documents
In the short video attached there are also some hints on how to work with numbering within track changes.
REMEMBER: Formatting may not look as it should as changes are only marked for deletion or addition at this point therefore a numbered paragraph may be indented too far but that may be because it is displaying a deleted number and a new number.
To check if formatting is actually ok change from viewing All Markup to No Markup (this allows you to display what the document will look like once the changes are accepted)
