If you receive a document or email with a link in it, it’s important to check that the link is a genuine link before you click on it.
Some links that you receive may be disguised as a link to the website the document relates to but when you click the link you may be directed to a completely different address.
If you hover over a link instead of clicking it the address of where the link leads to will be displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
If you hover over a link and the address at the bottom of the page doesn’t look like it relates to the site mentioned in the document please DO NOT click the link.
Shortening addresses is a common method that is used to disguise the true destination of the link. If you hover over a shortened link the full address will still be displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen – if you don’t recognise this address DO NOT click the link.
If you’ve received the address in an email the address of the site that the link refers can be seen by hovering over the link without clicking the mouse.
If the link in the email has been shortened e.g. doesn’t show the full website address you can still check that you will be directed to the correct site by hovering over the link without clicking the mouse.
